BMW 320i

According to the World Car Guide, BMW's 3-series vehicles are the benchmark to which compact executive vehicles are compared. Test-drive or own the BMW 320i, and you will see why.
To begin with, the looks of the BMW 320i combine modern aerodynamic features with the traditional, distinctive BMW grille, which blends harmoniously with the curvilinear lines of the 320i. From the side, view, the looks are both curvaceous and dynamic, hinting at speed and smooth handling - and they have a drag coefficient of 0.28 Cd.
And the BMW 320i has the zest and zoom promised by its looks. The 2-litre engine, with a quick shifting manual transmission, is capable of racing from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.0 seconds, and achieves this thanks to a maximum power of 115 kW at 6400 rpm and a maximum torque of 200 Nm at 3600 rpm. The BMW 320i has a vigorous top speed of 220 km/h (218 for the six speed automatic version), and is capable of pulling 695 kg (unbraked) if required. The fuel economy of the manual variant of the BMW 320i is very commendable, averaging 5.9 litres/100 km on the open road through independent reviews.  Around town, as one would expect, the BMW 320i consumes slightly more (11.3 litres/100 km), giving an average of 7.4 litres/100 km. The figures for the automatic BMW 320i are only very slightly higher, being 6.0 litres/100 km in the country and 11.4 litres/100 km in town, which average to 8.0 litres/100 km.
BMWs have always been well-made and reliable in a crash, and the 320i continues to uphold this worthy reputation. The standard DataDot technology is complemented by ABS, dynamic brake control, cornering brake control, automatic stability control plus traction and dynamic stability control, which all combine to make the BMW 320i safe and very stable. If you are unfortunate enough to have a crash (or if some stupid drip collides with you), the driver and front airbags will come into play (these airbags have an occupant detector function), as will the front side airbags, and the head airbag front and rear. All seats in the BMW 320i have been fitted with three-point seat belts, and the centre rear seat has a headrest, as do the other seats. Night driving is also made that little bit safer with a nice anti-dazzle mirror.
On the inside, the BMW 320i is tastefully decorated.  Depending on the variant, you will enjoy comfortable seating upholstered  in cloth trim for the BMW 320i and premium Dakota leather for the BMW 320i Executive, which can be offset by a range of trims, including natural poplar, burr walnut or brushed aluminium. A retractable front armrest gives an extra edge of driver comfort, especially when driving long-haul; this comfort is enhanced in the executive version of the BMW 320i, which has partial electric seat adjustment for the front seats. The automatic climate control, which comes complete with microfilter, helps you keep comfortably cool in all weathers. An in-dash CD/radio, a through-loading system with ski bag, an onboard computer and preparation for a Bluetooth mobile complete the standard offerings inside the entry-level BMW 320i.
As if the standard features weren't impressive enough, BMW offers a wide range of options for the 320i. Exterior options include metallic paint, fog lights (which already come as standard on the BMW 320i Executive), electric sunroof, adaptive bi-Xenon headlights and headlight washer system. On the inside, optional extras on offer range from electric lumbar support in the front passenger and driver seats to an 8.8" colour monitor and professional navigation system which includes TV and voice recognition.
What sort of driver would enjoy the BMW 320i?  Well, most drivers would enjoy the experience behind the wheel in either sedan or wagon guise and we certainly enjoyed our BMW 320i review. Certainly a small young family would be more than adequately transferred from A to B in the snug, well designed cabin. And, if extra space was required then the BMW 320i Touring model provides estate room.  The fine new BMW 320i is a very attractive proposition to any would-be buyer looking for the top of the class driving dynamics, and a state of the art driving experience - especially when the price tag starts at a little over fifty thousand dollars.
The current model series includes the:
  • BMW 320i Sedan
  • BMW 320i Touring

Honda announces end of Element production

After a nine-year run, the Honda Element will officially be killed off after the 2011 model year. The Element has suffered from slow sales numbers over the past few years, and in the model’s death notice, Hondaspecifically cites that a large amount of customers prefer the better refinement and improved fuel economy of the automaker’s CR-V crossover.
Since its debut in December of 2002, more than 325,000 Elements have been sold in the United States. During its lifespan, we saw the introduction of the bolder-looking SC model in 2007, and just last year, Honda began offering the 2010 Element with a dog-friendly package (pictured). Modest facelifts over the years have helped keep the Element somewhat fresh, but newer competitors on the scene have helped expose weaknesses in refinement and power. That said, Honda’s boxy sport-ute has long been praised for its utility-oriented and easy-to-maintain interior – not to mention kicking off the modern styling trend of boxy vehicles.

Mazda5 minivans recalled over fuel pump concerns

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a safety recall on certain Mazda5 minivans from the 2009 and 2010 model year.
This recall focuses on the van’s fuel pump, with NHTSA citing that water may not have been completely removed from the pump’s harness connector before vehicle assembly. Thus, the connector pin may corrode, causing the pin to break. If the harness connector breaks, this could lead to an inoperative fuel pump. The Mazda5′s engine could stall, and the inability to restart the engine increases the risk of a crash.
Approximately 16,200 of the Mazda minivans are effected by this problem, and the safety recall is expected to begin on or before December 11th. Dealers will inspect the fuel pump connector and replace the harness free of charge. For the full details, follow the jump to read NHTSA’s official statement.

Jaguar cars

Jaguar Cars Limited is a British luxury car manufacturer famous for its elegantly-styled sports cars and luxury saloons. The company was founded in 1922 by two motorcycle enthusiasts, William Lyons and William Walmsley, under the name Swallow Sidecar Company (also referred to as SS Cars Ltd). Originally based in Blackpool, it was eventually moved to Conventry, first to Browns Lane and then to Whitley. Since 1989, Jaguar Cars Limited has been owned by Ford and it is currently included in Premier Automotive Group (PAG).

The name Jaguar is pronounced "jag-you-uh" in its native United Kingdom, while North American speakers normally pronounce it "jag wahr". The nickname “Jag” is used all over the world.
Jaguar Cars holds Royal Warrants from Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Charles.

Jaguar company history

As mentioned above, Jaguar can trace its history back to 1922. The SS Jaguar name was first used in 1935 when it was given to a 2.5L saloon. In 1945, the entire company changed its name to Jaguar. During the 1950s, the company achieved great fame and success and in 1960 Jaguar purchased the Daimler car company (not the same as Daimler-Benz). Starting in the late 1960s, Daimler became the brand name for the most luxurious saloons produced by Jaguar. In 1966, Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and the result was the formation of British Motor Holdings (BMH). After further merges with Rover and Leyland, the company was renamed British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC).
During the 1970s, the company suffered from a reputation of producing unreliable cars. When Jaguar was purchased by Ford, extensive quality improvements were carried out to remedy the problems and re-establish Jaguar as a brand connected with quality and reliability. Soon, the work began to show drastic results.
During the early 1980s, Jaguar was entered as a separate company on the stock market as a part of the Thatcher era privatisations. In 1989, the Ford Motor Company offered to purchase Jaguar, and the offer was accepted in 1990. Jaguar was therefore removed form the London Stock Exchange listings on 28 February 1990.

Jaguar facilities

Originally based in Blackpool, the company was moved to Coventry in 1928 – a region often referred to as the heart of British motor industry. The first Coventry base was located in Browns Lane, but it was later moved to Whitley. The old Browns Lane facility was open until 2005. Today, the Jaguar cars are assembled at the Castle Bromwich facility in Birmingham and at the Halewood facility in Liverpool. Castle Bromwich makes the Jaguar XJ, XK and S-Type, while the X-Type is made at Halewood.

When Land Rover was purchase by Ford in 2002, Jaguar and Land Rover became strongly associated with each other. In many parts of the world, the Jaguar and Land Rover are now sharing the same network for sales and distribution, including joined dealerships. Some Jaguars and Land Rover models even share the same components, and the production facility in Halewood constructs Jaguar X-Type cars as well as the Freelander 2 from Land Rover.

Ford to introduce Escape/Kuga concept in Detroit

A source within Ford Motor Company has reportedly revealed that a near-production crossover concept will be heading to the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. When this concept vehicle takes its production shape, it will serve as the replacement for the venerable Ford Escape and Kuga crossovers.
Based off of the 2012 Focus’ platform, the new Escape/Kuga is expected to go into production in the second half of 2012 and be sold as a 2013 model in the United States. At this time, it is unclear as to whether or not Ford will keep both the Escape and Kuga names in the vehicles’ respective markets. The automaker’s “One Ford” global product strategy would call for a single name for vehicles sold in different regions, and the Blue Oval team will surely face a similar problem with the redesigned Fusion and Mondeo sedans in the near term.
We’ll have the full scoop direct from the Cobo Hall in January, so stay tuned.

Subaru releases brand new boxer engine details

Subaru’s new boxer engine details have just been released and the main result is better fuel economy than the existing models whilst maintaining plenty of power and torque.

The new Subaru normally-aspirated (non-turbo) engine is the third generation developed by Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru’s father company, and it’s the first brand new engine since 1989.
Subaru engines have always been robust, fairly powerful and very torquey especially when matched to high-geared ratios within Subaru’s all-wheel drive system. But the engines weak link has always been consumption and economy. It’s not that the engines are bad on fuel, they just consume a little more than the rivals.
Now though, Subaru and Fuji Heavy Industries have improved this area with indications noting a 10 percent increase in fuel economy. This was done through the use of lighter moving parts and an Active Valve Control system for the intake and exhaust.
The new 2.0-litre engine uses undersquare bore and stroke measurements too, meaning the pistons travel further than they are wide; 84mm bore and a 90mm stroke. This helps with torque and reduces the engine’s inclination to want to rev higher for more performance. Figures of 109kW and 196Nm are on offer.
Managing Director, Subaru Australia, Nick Senior said in a recent report,
“This is an exciting engineering development from FHI. They’re renowned for the durability of their engines and this new unit will take the sophistication to a whole new level that we’ll look forward to experiencing in some versions of our best-selling Forester next year.”
Subaru says the new engine will be available in both 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre capacities and will first go into the market with the Subaru Forester model year 2011, which will be launched early next year.

Subaru Toyota 2011

These are very first spy shots of the Subaru and Toyota joint-developed rear-wheel-drive coupe. The test mule seen in the pictures looks like it’s sporting many body parts from the Legacy, albeit it’s apparent that coupe is much more compact in dimensions. We’re not so sure about the platform but in a previous official statement issued by the two Japanese carmakers, the yet unnamed coupes will be based on an all-new platform with power coming from Subaru’s range of boxer engines.
Judging by our experience that could translate to a modified version of the existing Impreza platform and 2.0 / 2.5-liter naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. Needless to say that we can’t make any assumptions about the coupe’s appearance from the test mule pics. However, since both coupes are slated to enter production in 2011, expect a Toyota and Subaru concept version to appear sometime in 2009 with the production version making its official appearance in a major car show in 2010.

BMW X1 2011

For the first time the features and qualities so typical of a BMW X model are besides available in a premium vehicle in the compact segment. Indeed, the BMW X1 is entering the market with the assignment to offer the Sheer Driving Pleasure so characteristic of BMW with a recently made known measure of quality also in this segment of the market. The latest member in the family of BMW X models therefore stands for versatile, sporting performance and supreme agility in some urban environment and beyond.

In Europe, the X1 will be available in six trim levels, from the 258 horsepower, straight-six gasoline powered X1 xDrive28i to the turbodiesel X1 xDrive23d, which produces 295 pound-feet of torque. BMW isn’t telling which, if any, of the European power trains we will see in the North American X1, but the press release makes special mention of the X1 sDrive18d, which reaches an estimated 54.3 mpg (EU standard), so we think it’s safe to assume that at least that variant will make the hop across the pond.

CR-Z, Crosstour, Insight sales hurting – Odyssey lone bright spot among new Honda models

Honda has hit rough water with sales of its new CR-Z, Accord Crosstour and Insight models According toAutomotive News, the three models are underperforming in a big way.
Take the Insight hybrid, which is falling 40,000 units short of even the most conservative estimates inside the company. Outsold 8-to-1 by its Toyota Prius rival, Honda has only managed to shift 19,325 units through November – the company originally targeted sales of 60,000 to 80,000.
Likewise, thus far this year, Honda has sold nearly 20,000 fewer Crosstour models than its biggest competitor – the Toyota Venza, selling just 25,927 units compared to the Toyota’s 43,325. Need we remind you, Honda’s original sales goal for the Crosstour was 40,000 units per year, a number we were deeply skeptical of after first driving the vehicle at its launch last November.
Although it hasn’t been on the market that long, early sales for Honda’s new CR-Z hybrid coupe aren’t any more encouraging. Automotive News reports that Honda had conservatively intended to sell around 15,000 of the two-seat hybrids per year, but so far, only 4,373 have made their way off of dealer lots and another 3,000 are currently sitting in inventory. Thankfully, there is one bright spot in the Honda stable – the 2011 Odyssey. The minivan bowed in September, and it’s performing well against a minivan segment that has heated up with a range of new competitors.
